The presentation layer handles the syntax and semantics of messages, converting codes between machines, and other data conversion services. This layer is typically where data compression and data encryption is done.
Examples of Presentation Layer protocols include:
HTTP
AppleTalk Filing Protocol AFP
SNA
An example of data conversions that occur at this layer is converting ASCII to EBCDIC and EBCDIC to ASCII.
On Windows, the redirector operates at the presentation layer.
