Layer 4 - Session Layer

The session layer is responsible for establishing, managing and terminating sessions between machines.

Continuing with the railroad analogy, let's say we were sending a circus back to the east coast. The session layer would be responsible for breaking down the circus into it's component parts (sending them to the transport layer for loading onto the train), then reassembling them back into a circus at the destination.
