Network Utilities
There are many tools available all over the internet to help you with your web site and domain name.
- Ping
-
Need to see if a host is available, crashed or working? Want to find out if your computer is connected to the internet? If so, then PING might be the utility that you need. Use PING (either from your computer or a remote system) to test connectivity or to see if a system is working. It's a great place to start when troubleshooting a network problem.
- Whois
-
Registrars are required by law to keep valid and up-to-date contact information for all domain names available to the general public. This is known as the WHOIS database, and it follows a specific standard. You may find out the contact data for any domain by issuing a WHOIS command. These exist on numerous systems all over the internet.
- DNSquery
-
If you want to find out the information from the DNS of a domain, you can use the DNSquery utility.
- NSlookup
-
The NSlookup utility is similar to the DNS query function, except that you can request specific record types from the DNS.
- Traceroute
-
Another great tool for troubleshooting a network is called traceroute. This gem of a program shows you how packets get from one location on the internet or network to another.
- IPCONFIG
-
You can use IPCONFIG to determine the current status of your TCP/IP information. This is especially useful if you use DHCP.
